    Identity Theft in the Military?

    • Identity theft can have particularly devastating consequences for military personnel, as they are
often targeted due to the unique nature of their work and the personal information they must
share to perform their duties. Identity theft is a growing problem for people on the military.
    • In 2024, the FTC received over 1.1 million reports of identity theft (Source: FTC). Also in 2024,
the military community experienced a 6% increase in fraud reports, reaching nearly 100,000
cases (Source: AARP). Military members are often targeted by scammers because they have steady and regular paychecks and government benefits, making them attractive targets for
criminals. Additionally, the frequent relocations associated with military life can make it difficult for service members to monitor their credit reports and spot early warning signs of identity theft. Same goes for service members on extended deployments where service members are unable to effectively monitor their financial accounts and credit reports due to lack of ability
or computer access. Finally, data breaches at government agencies may lead to the sale of personal information online, making it easier for scammers to target military members.
    • Identity theft can have serious consequences for military members, including loss of security clearances, difficulty in obtaining security clearances, difficulty obtaining loans or credit accounts, difficulty buying a car or renting an apartment and even legal problems. It is important
for military members to take steps to protect their personal information, such as monitoring their credit reports regularly, checking all financial accounts for unusual activity regularly, being cautious about sharing personal information online or on the telephone, and using strong passwords and two-factor authentication on all accounts. Also consider changing your passwords often and using a combination of letters, numbers and special symbols.
    • Beyond financial strain is the emotion and professional toll identity theft can have on individuals
serving in the military. Resolving identity theft situations requires time and resources that deployed service members may not have. Service members may need to hire an attorney to help restore their credit profiles and fight against improper collection efforts and collections lawsuits. Moreover identity theft can leave victims with a sense of violation, betrayal and hopelessness because of the intimate nature of the compromised information.
